MAKEUP TIPS For ‘LITTLE PRINCESSES’
![]()

Wearing makeup can be an exciting part of pageant preparation for younger contestants! Consider the age-appropriateness of makeup for your ‘little princess’, and in which type of pageant she is participating. Most pageants will clearly state whether makeup is allowed on younger contestants, and at what age group makeup can be worn. ‘Natural’ or ‘Glitz’ pageants will typically list makeup guidelines, therefore review carefully, making sure your ‘little princess’ won’t be disqualified for the type of pageant in which she is entering.
A good makeup rule to remember for pageant contestants of any age: Makeup should enhance natural beauty, not distract or cover it up.
Below are some helpful makeup hints for ‘little princesses’:
- Depending on the type of pageant (Natural or Glitz), most young contestants will benefit from glowing cheeks added with a sweeping of blush, a hint of lip color applied with lip gloss or a lip pencil colored onto the lips, and carefully-applied mascara.
- Combing the eyebrows with a brow fixative will add a groomed look to the eyes.
- To enhance for a ‘Glitz’ dramatic look (keeping age-appropriateness in mind) eyeliner can be added along the top lash line, definition can be added to the eyes with lightly-applied shimmering eye shadows or subtly sparkling eye shadow dusts, finishing with a dash of mascara.
- Also fun for a ‘Glitz’ dramatic look are body shimmer powders in softly shimmering tones. These can be used on the shoulders, arms and legs, but keep in mind that for pageant body shimmer powders should be very subtle, not heavily glittered.
Important for all ages of pageant contestants: makeup tones should flatter and coordinate with the color of the pageant dress or gown - no clashing, distracting makeup colors! An example of clashing colors would be wearing a fuschia lip color and blush with a peach dress.
Do:
- Complement the pageant dress color with coordinating makeup colors.
- Apply either loose powder or pressed powder for touchup prior to photos and stage (no sweaty or oily faces).
- Add color to the lips to brighten the face. Lip liner pencils can help define the lip line. Avoid very bright or harsh tones on younger contestants.
Don’t:
- Use heavily-glittered eye shadows or blushers. Subtle shimmer is just as effective and more age-appropriate for ‘little princesses’ and is flattering for photos and videos.
- Use heavy foundation makeup products on young skins. Most skins will benefit from a brushing of loose face powder. However, if a foundation is desired, using a pressed powder foundation (sometimes called dual-finish or two-way foundation) is just as effective without the heavy appearance of a liquid or cream foundation base.
- Apply too many coats of mascara to younger age groups. When too much mascara is used on younger contestants, the result is a heavily-lidded eye and is too harsh for ‘little princesses’.
Stage Check: Keeping your ‘little princess’ stage perfect…
1) Check for any smudged lip color. Depending on the age of the competitor, a good solution to smudged lip glosses or lipstick is to just apply a lip liner pencil to line the lips, then color in the lips with the pencil. Because of the drier consistency of the lip pencil, it will be less likely to smear or smudge onto her face or dress.
2) For any mascara smudges, use a cotton swab to remove the smudge instead of fingers
3) Make sure she is freshly-powdered (no shiny faces). TIP: If she needs a touchup, ask her to lean outward toward you (leaning over the skirt of her dress) while you re-apply her powder, so any excess powder will fall onto the ground, not onto her dress.

WHY select highly-pigmented makeup colors? Makeup colors that look best for photography and stage are usually highly-pigmented, meaning they contain strong color pigments and are not sheer. A highly-pigmented makeup color product will allow the user to apply a small amount to achieve a bit of color or it can provide darker, dramatic color when applied more heavily. This allows flexibility for the user to achieve her preferred look. Along with being longer-lasting, the strong color pigment in highly-pigmented makeup colors will hold up against the harsh lighting from cameras and stage lights (no washed-out, ghostly makeup looks).
